Putting a Baby on their Back to Sleep

Medical experts are united in emphasizing the importance of placing a baby on their back to sleep, not their tummy.  The baby should sleep on their back and on a flat surface.  A baby's airflow is much better, with a far lower chance of choking, when they lay on their back. The bassinet or crib should be free of toys, extra blankets, and any side bumpers.  Newborns should only be placed on their tummy when they are awake and supervised.  Until they reach 7 weeks old they should not be put on their tummy for more than 15-30 minutes a day.
